Stop 1: AZ-Groeninge - Kortrijk
The façade of the new Groeninge hospital in Kortrijk was originally designed to be constructed using horizontal concrete beams and vertical columns in brick masonry. After a lengthy preliminary study it was decided to construct the entire façade in architectural concrete whereby the façade elements would have both a supporting and esthetical function. The well thought-out production method produces cost savings of several hundred thousand euros.
Stop 2: Decomo Moeskroen (lunch)
A company that manufactures architectural concrete has to be a showcase for its own product. There is no better place to showcase these capabilities than its own office. For the building of the offices of DECOMO, according to a design by Van Oost architectural firm, a great deal of exposed precast concrete was used, both inside and outside. The timeless architecture is also a pilot project: by using concrete with self-cleaning properties obtained by adding titanium dioxide, the manufacturer tests out the concept. A project that is worth a visit.
Stop 3: House in Temse
Luc Binst has a penchant for concrete and has found a kindred spirit in his client, the technical director of the Cordeel contractors’ firm. He knows more than anybody else about the advantages of precast concrete both for supporting elements and the shell because he is well versed in the construction technique.
